Stollen

Stollen is a yeasted pastry from Germany traditionally served around the winter holidays since the 15th century – a Christmas staple in my Austrian family. The rich buttery dough is spiced with cardamom, vanilla and orange, studded with liquor-soaked fruit, and swaddles a center of marzipan, which some say represents the baby Jesus (but is delicious regardless of your religious affiliation)!
